We are often asked about the effects bariatric surgery can have on patients who suffer from diabetes and from discussions at our meetings, it is quite apparent that after surgery, many of our members on related oral medication say they are placed on a much smaller dosage or instructed to stop all medication completely.
But what about those on insulin, how are they affected and what advise is there for maintaining critical blood sugar levels during their time on the pre-op diet?
To throw some light on this rather grey area, we are delighted to have Dr Akrem Elmalti, a diabetic consultant at Scunthorpe General Hospital, together with clinical nurse, Claire Briggs as our guest speakers at the next Scunthorpe Group Meeting to hopefully provide some clarification.
After a presentation by Dr Elmalti, there will be an opportunity to ask questions so please come along to what we know will be a most interesting evening.

Credit where credit's due, Jules and Rachel did an outstanding job at the July Scunthorpe Group Meeting.
It was obvious a lot of time and effort had gone into preparing for their first go-it-alone meeting as Group Leaders for Scunthorpe and North East Lincolnshire (although Colin couldn't resist having his two-penneth worth from the sidelines!).
The Scunthorpe meetings are always very popular which was evident by the number of new faces in attendance as well as many long-term members.
Choosing Pre-Op and Post-Op diets as the subject for discussion, they had produced handouts detailing all and everything you can eat at various stages and even included a few recipe suggestions.

The Cheshire and Northwest Group Meeting was hosted, as usual, by the Spire Regency, Macclesfield on Wednesday, 14 April, 2010.
Both Dave and I were extremely pleased to find more than double the number of members in attendance since last time and we can confidently say the whole evening was a success from beginning to end.
After introducing ourselves to the group, we gave a brief outline into what Owlss is all about and an insight into the gastric procedures we had undergone.
Following on, our guest speaker, Mr Anselm Agwunobi (Bariatric Surgeon) gave an excellent presentation of Bariatric procedures via power point. The audience where captivated by the whole event, so much so that Mr Agwunobi, spoke for a full hour and then took questions for a further 30 minutes.
